On the heels of that terrible announcement, we get a couple games not many people were excited about.

Buku Sudoku - 800 MS points, rated E (for everyone)
Warlords - 400 MS points, rated E (still for everyone)

Buku Sudoku "takes the pen-and-paper puzzler high-tech with HD graphics...single- and multiplayer game modes, multiple grid sizes...and even solve puzzles. 1,200 puzzles give you plenty of opportunity to challenge your own brain, play cooperatively, race head-to-head, or compete in the new battle mode..."
Keep trying to make Sudoku exciting guys, one of these years it may work.

We also have a retro title - Warlords. "..one of the classic multiplayer experiences of the coin-op era. You and three other players (A.I. controlled or Human), join together in a Breakout-style battle, each controlling a paddle protecting their own castle from rebounding fireballs. Use your skill to deflect these missiles onto other players’ castles. Once you breach each opponent's walls, it's game over for them, until the last man standing wins the day!"

I hate to say this, but Warlords, the evil retro title seems like it would be more exciting than EXTREME BATTLE SUDOKU!!! HAI!!!!!

Delisting and NO SPRING UPDATE!!!
User Rating: / 0

Tuesday, 27 May 2008

Well, there isn't going to be a Spring Update.   The list floating around the web was a fake.  It had everything anyone could want though.  From the Next Generation interview with general manager of Xbox Live Marc Whitten:

"...no spring dashboard update for Xbox 360 owners this year, saying that resources were instead focused on “building the proper infrastructure and scale for the service.”

Then he goes on to say that the DRM licensing issue with regards to content downloaded in the past is being resolved.  More than two years later.

So say goodbye to your update this spring, and hope for something in the fall.  Something that includes group chat...

There is a new XBLA size limit.  350MB  All I have to say about that is - Thanks for throwing anyone with a 20GB hard drive or memory card under the bus.  How about a discount on a new 120GB hard drive guys!!!

He also went into detail about "de-listing" arcade games that were underperforming.  Let me say out front that I think that is a horrible idea.  People can still buy them if they are recommended by the Tell A Friend feature, and can be re-downloaded if you've purchased in the past and deleted.  If they want to make it easier to find the good games, why wouldn't they just re-tool the menus?  Add a search function maybe??  Don't start removing things and say it's for my benefit!  Band-aids don't heal gaping knife wounds guys.

From GSB

We've upped the XBLA size limit from 150mb to 350mb.

We've stated that underperforming games on XBLA may be delisted.  To be delisted, a game has to meet all three of the following criteria:

  • Been on the service for at least 6 months
  • Have less than a 65 Metacritic rating
  • Have a conversion rate of less than 6%

Now, let's get into your delisting questions:

Q: What's "conversion rate"?
A:  When people download a trial XBLA game, and then purchase that game, that's called a conversion.  So if less than 6% of all trials downloaded lead to full game purchases - that's one of the 3 criteria we look at when deciding to delist a game.

Q:  Why are you delisting games?
A:  We have a LOT of XBLA titles onto the service.  By filtering out the lower performing games, it will actually make it easier to find the games you really want.

Q:  If I bought a game, and deleted it, can I redownload it even if it's been delisted?
A:  Yes, you can.  Go to Download History under the Account Management section of marketplace (far left blade).

Q:  Can I still play a game after it's been delisted?  What about playing online?  What about leaderboards?
A:  Yes, yes, and yes.  The game will function normally even after being delisted.  You can continue to play the game single and multiplayer, as well as use the leaderboards as you normally would.

It just happens to be Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One.

The game retails for 1600 points, and will be one of "several" installments per year, for an untold number of years. The game is rated M for Mature.

This title has been discussed before, but let me say this...it better be damn good for 20 bucks.  DAMN GOOD.  Expect 4 per year, or if it doesn't live up to expectations because of 1) People not wanting to pay this extremely high price point for an Arcade game, or 2) It's shitty, then don't expect more than 1 or 2.

Saw this on Kotaku.

Please note that this is PURELY speculation at this point, and Microsoft has denied knowledge of this list.   But still...there is some cool stuff on it.

I love spring updates!

Massive "I'm sorry there haven't been any updates".....update!

As many of our regular visitors have noticed by now, we have been especially lax in terms of keeping up with the site, especially the news (and the podcast to a greater extent). Well, expect that to change as of now and stay changed for quite some time. As far as explanations, let's just say that finals and the weeks leading up to them are quite busy and irritating and also that, well, Mike was on vacation and could care less. Or something. Anyway, I thought I'd put up an end-of-week recap of what we've missed. Thanks go out to UTWarden (and others) for chat and forum posts, as well as Xbox Live messages, for attempting to keep us focused!

First things first. This week, the arcade saw the release of "Wits and Wagers," a somewhat "Balderdash"-esque betting game of trivia. An interesting thing to note is that this game is compatible with the "Big-button" controllers that come with "Scene-It." It was made by Hidden Path Entertainment, who, for those that don't know, were recently featured on Inside Xbox. They are one of many independent studios to make their way onto the Arcade. I'm definitely looking forward to their next game Defense Grid, slated for release this summer.

More thanks go out to Ben Ward at Bizarre Creations for notifying us of their website's new feature: Online-viewable leaderboards for both Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved and Boom Boom Rocket. You can find the GW Leaderboards here and the BBR leaderboards here (nice job Arcade Meister!). With both games, you are able to view every permutation of statistics available in the retail games. Nice work Bizarre!

Also of interest, especially to any developers or those who enjoy tinkering: The XNA team released the XNA Game Studio 3.0 Community Technical Preview (or CTP). What does this mean to you, oh adventurous programmer? Well, all the details are available at the XNA Team Blog, but one of the major highlights is the ability to make games for all Zune devices. You should know however that there are some technical requirements to do so and if you do upgrade to the CTP, you can only develop for the PC and Zune. If you want 360 development, you'll have to stick with the current version and wait until everything is finalized. Here's hoping for Zune games with Gamerscore!

I'll leave you guys with promise of an impending, stupendous and to-die-for podcast. Also, if you haven't already, checkout my YouTube Channel. Most of the videos so far are of Rock Band DLC, but I've also got relatively new Geometry Wars Tutorials with naration, so take a look. If you just so happen to subscribe, so be it...

Arcade Game for 4-2-08

This weeks Arcade game is Mr Driller.  He drills through blocks, being careful to avoid both falling goo and running out of breathable air.  Not sure what to think about this one.  It was a dreamcast game that I never heard of.  Seems like a decent idea though.  It will support 4 players over Xbox Live, coop and versus multiplayer modes, along with Standard and Quest single player modes.

Mr Driller is rated E (for everyone), and will cost 800 MS points.

There is also some new DLC coming for Pinball FX.  Not sure what, but I'd imagine that there will be a new table or two.
